The Complete Online Guide to Knifemaking, POST HEAT TREATING CLEAN UP

Heat treatment and tempering will leave the blade discolored and covered with scales. After heat treatment and tempering the knife will have to have is bevels and blade surface re finished. We used a Tilt Table Bevel Jig to grind the rough bevels. After heat treating we go back to the Tilt Table and regrind the bevels using a finer grit belt. As long as the blade is flat which should always be checked after heat treating the bevel clean up is usually pretty quick.  The blade is then surface ground using an attachment for the 2x72 belt grinder.

We have created a short how-to video (posted above) which details the process.
